Donald Freking received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics from the University of Iowa in 1988. While pursuing his degree he interned with Living History Farms in Des Moines. During his internship he obtained a flare for traditional folk pottery. He owned and operated Eastern Iowa Artists and Craftsmen, a local pottery in West Branch, Iowa prior to relocating to Georgia.
He relocated to Georgia in the early 1990's. He did some work with the Eddie Martin Pottery in Marietta and Ward Sculptural Arts in Holly Springs before deciding to build a kiln and open his own studio in his home in Woodstock, GA.
Currently he owns and operates the Donald Freking Pottery in Cartersville, GA. The studio and gallery that stands today was built in 1941 and was known as the Georgia Art Pottery founded by the late Bill Gordy.
